How is it February already? I don’t know where January went, but I can tell you it was filled with some interesting gluten-free stories. Because these news items don’t fit into my regular posts, I love to do a roundup every so often. Here’s what caught my attention recently:
“20 Surprising Foods That Contain Gluten.” I’m always grateful when a mainstream magazine like Health deals with this subject. This article by registered dietitian Johna Burdeos covers plenty of territory that gluten-intolerant people already know (everyone reading this is aware that soy sauce contains wheat, right?), and some that you may not (couscous is frequently mistaken for rice, but it’s made from wheat).
“Best Gluten-Free Meal Delivery Services of 2024.” I’m a New Yorker so I’m very familiar with the concept of ordering takeout, but I have to admit that I’ve never used a meal-delivery service. For anyone who does, this article by Tori Martinet in U.S. News & World Report should be an interesting read, complete with information about pricing, plus pros and cons for each service.
“Where to Get Gluten-Free Bagels in New Jersey for National Bagel Day.” Okay, I’ll be honest: I didn’t know there’s a national bagel day. But I’m up for taste-testing gluten-free bagels any day of the year, so I’ve bookmarked this article by Kara VanDooijeweert. Note that Plum Bakery in Montclair, NJ, is a dedicated gluten-free facility.
It’s February, which means this is the month PowerSoul Cafe is scheduled to open. Touting itself as “the world’s first certified gluten-free fast food restaurant chain,” its three Nevada locations will offer some vegan and allergy-aware dishes too. Next time I’m in Las Vegas, I’ll be sure to check it out.
“Your Guide to Gluten-Free Beers in Portland.” The title says it all. If you’re near Portland, Oregon, and you’re looking for celiac-friendly beer, you need to read this piece by Matt Wastradowski. Fun fact: there are two dozen exclusively gluten-free breweries in the US, and three of them are located in Portland!
“Break-in Reported at Gluten-Free Bakery on Chicago's North Side.” Even if you’ve never been to Defloured, a dedicated gluten-free bakery in Andersonville, you may have encountered the bakery’s goods at other spots around Chicago. After the break-in, there was a campaign to support Defloured by purchasing gift cards (the bakery ships nationwide); if you’d like to take part, click here.
